Why Would Anyone Go On a Hoarding Show?

After my 8/29/10 appearance as an organizer on TLC’s Hoarding: Buried Alive I was repeatedly asked why people go on hoarding shows. People ask the question with a mix of admiration, confusion, and wonder. I believe there are 3 reasons:

1. To get help. Not everyone can find a way to pay for an organizer and therapist. The shows provide a great way to get lots of free help. And you can bet that the people helping them on the show are highly motivated to help the hoarder be successful!

2. To help others. Some people go on a hoarding show with the hope that by telling their story they will help someone who is watching. Many people are motivated to make changes in their own lives when they see a similar person doing it.

3. For accountability. When their relatives, co-workers, and neighbors see their over-stuffed homes on a TV show there is some pressure to improve the situation. That pressure may not exist until they expose their situation in such a dramatic way, and some people respond well to pressure.

What do you think? Are there other reasons a person might go on a hoarding show?
