Tip: Procrastinaton

Procrastination Part I  December 2011 (repost)

This month we start the subject of procrastination. We all do it at least occasionally, sometimes frequently. If procrastination is a problem for you, the first step is to figure out why you are procrastinating. Here are some common causes, broken into 3 categories:

1. Feelings/Moods –

  •      the task is unpleasant
  •      you feel overwhelmed
  •      you are not in the mood
  •      you don’t want the responsibility
  •      you fear success
  •      you “thrive” on the adrenalin rush caused by waiting until the last minute

2. Thoughts/Cognitions –

  •      the task is too difficult
  •      the goals are unclear
  •      it seems unimportant
  •      it might go away
  •      you need time to mull it over

3. Behaviors/Practicalities –

  •      interruptions
  •      disorganization
  •      a lack of information
  •      not enough time
  •      it isn’t due for a while
  •      you what to do it perfectly

When you catch yourself procrastinating, try to identify the reasons. Sometimes that revelation will be enough to jumpstart you into action. If not, come back next month and we will tackle some strategies to reduce procrastination.
